Started in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the single TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to secure john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level names remained functional.
